Overview of Nikon ZR cinema camera

ZR 6K Cinema Camera is a powerhouse from Nikon that also combines RED’s color science to enable you to capture high-quality cinematic footage. Nikon ZR has internal stabilization for smooth and steady images , 32-bit float audio, 15+ stops of dynamic range, advanced autofocus, dual-base ISO, and up to 6K60 video capture in REDCODE, N-RAW, or ProRes RAW.

 

Another feature of the ZR Cinema Camera is that it has a IBIS sensor that can be felt moving around the camera body when it is not on. The sensor locks into place when the camera turns on and the stabilization function is active. For audio recording, this camera provides for high-quality dynamic 32-bit float and 24-bit float as well as standard 48 kHz linear PCM for full video compatibility. The built-in microphones have five directional patterns (front/narrow, front, rear, omnidirectional, and binaural). An external mic can also be added via a line input on the camera while the headphone jack next to it is for audio monitoring.

 

Nikon ZR provides up to 9-subject detection autofocus with automatic tracking of people, animals, and vehicles, powered by deep learning. For recording this camera utilizes a CFexpress Type B cards as well as microSD cards for proxy recording. There is also a micro-HDMI output that allows you to output to a display or recording device.

 

Nikon + RED

For this camera, Nikon has partnered with RED for a wide range of production workflows. These are REDCODE RAW R3D NE recording, Nikon’s N-RAW, ProRes RAW HQ/422 HQ, and the compressed H.264 and H.265 codecs. REDCODE RAW (R3D NE) unlocks the same color space (REDWideGamutRGB) and Log curve (Log3G10) as RED cameras. Video resolution is up to 6K60, 4K120, and even 1080p240 for high frame rate, and slow-motion recording.

 

Other Features

A variable-angle touchscreen display that is 4-inch with DCI-P3 color gamut, 1000 cd/m² brightness, and a 3.07 million dot resolution. The display automatically flips from from horizontal to vertical mode.

This camera allows for the addittion of up to 10 LUTs into the camera for real-time preview on its screen.

It also has dual-base ISO, providing 800/6400 for both Log3G10 and N-Log profiles.

You can also set the shutter angle to one of 15 steps between 5.6 and 360° for powerful exposure and blur control.

The ZR camera can be connected to a phone via the companion app and utilizes the optional Frame.io cloud service.

For power this camera uses Nikon’s EN-EL15c battery and it can also be powered via USB-C from an external power source such as a v-mount battery or power bank.
